# Before any firmware work on a Fujifilm X-T5: backup checklist

Public version from AI for Mortals. Educational use only, at your own risk.

Do every step before Claude touches firmware. Nothing here changes the camera's firmware.

1. **Note the firmware version.** MENU > SET UP (wrench) > USER SETTING > FIRMWARE VERSION. Write it here: ______
(The open-source USB tools were tested on 4.20 to 4.31.)
2. **Save the official firmware file for that version** on the computer, in a `firmware/official/` folder. Never edit
   this copy. Download page: https://www.fujifilm-x.com/global/support/download/firmware/cameras/x-t5/
Fuji only posts the latest version. If your camera is on an older one, you can't download your current firmware.
Write that down; the latest file can still be studied on the computer, but it isn't your camera's firmware.
3. **Back up all settings, twice.**
   - Camera: NETWORK/USB SETTING > CONNECTION MODE > USB RAW CONV./BACKUP RESTORE.
   - a) FUJIFILM TETHER APP (formerly X Acquire): save camera settings to a file.
   - b) fujicli `backup` (https://github.com/karaolidis/fujicli).
   - Save both files in a `backups/` folder, with the C1-C7 slot backup, and record each file's SHA-256.
   - A settings backup restores recipes and menus. It cannot fix a camera that won't turn on.
4. **Copy everything off the SD card** (photos, videos) to the computer, then use a spare card for firmware work.
5. **Battery 100%**, and keep a second charged battery. Don't rely on USB power alone.
6. **Official firmware only.** Never install a modified firmware file.
7. **Stop point.** Before anything is installed on the camera, Claude stops and asks you. You decide, on the camera.

If anything goes wrong during an official update: don't power off, don't touch the camera, wait it out (up to about
10 minutes).
If the camera won't turn on after a modified install: there's no public recovery; it goes to Fujifilm for repair.
